Compassion in Haiti

I'm sure most of you have heard about the earthquake that rocked Haiti Tuesday. Hawk and I sponsor a child in Haiti through Compassion International, and my dad's side of the family is from Dominican Republic.

Our sponsor child, Kenley, is located just outside of Saint-Marc, and I believe that most of the destruction took place around the capital, Port-au-Prince.

Before we began this sponsorship, I thought little of Haiti beyond the stories a few of my friends relayed about their time volunteering there. Americans are notorious for their lack of geographical knowledge and sense of relation. But Hawk keeps tabs on the country now that we have a little friend there.

We've written and called Compassion to ascertain the probability of Kenley's safety. In the meantime, we're trying to figure out what we can offer. B. Clinton was on NPR yesterday explaining that at the moment, the nation simply needs money, water, food. They can't even begin restoration because the place is a cemetery.

So tomorrow, we'll post about bright kitchens. In the meantime, today is set aside for that little guy.

  2. Nice to meet you, Kenley. Jen, do send pictures when you get a chance.

Here's a link to a great perspective on the situation in Haiti and how to rebuild the country. Plus, it explains why it's tragically ironic that Bill Clinton has any part in helping Haiti recover from this.
