you went to Kansas for vacation?

Oh yes, we did. And it was one of the best weekends/mini-vacations we've ever enjoyed. We went to visit Hawk's friends from high school, Luke & Lori. It's a 10 hour drive without stops, so here's a little review of the trip...

Our attempt at a self-portrait:

Hawk says my cheeks are huge. Yeah, I'm not really that photogenic.

And then we hit Iowa. It has to be the longest state of the same image I have ever seen. We've done this trip through Iowa twice now, and while it is so relaxing, there isn't that much to snap besides these:

But the speed limit is 70 there, so every goes about 80. So more of this went whizzing by, and I kept thinking about scenes from The Road of Perdition...

And the infamous, largest-trucker-stop-ever:

Where mah man loaded up the car,

And I loaded up on things I haven't eaten since soccer tournament weekends in high school:

Then, I'm not sure if you can really see this, but the road is RED. Only the outer lanes going both ways. We have no idea why this is, but it was pretty neat.

And then the blue broke:

And we entertained each other by doing what we're best at, sort of. Hawk serenaded me with a little mandolin (yes, Momma, I did take this shot going 80 miles an hour through Iowa, and look how great it is!):

And I read aloud to him from a few books, one of which was The Guernsey Literary and Potatoe Peel Pie Society:

We rolled through Kansas City around 9:30pm. I attempted a few shots, but with my very cool 3.2 pixeled camera, I'm afraid this is all I could accomplish. Thankfully, it looks a little artistic:

But finally, WE ARRIVED in Lawrence, home of the University of Kansas, aka KU!

The next day, Luke and Lori took us on a tour of their hometown. Lori did her undergrad at KU, and Luke completed his J.D. there a couple years after she graduated. So of course, we hit it first.

Check out these fantastic buildings:

And then, we came to one of the coolest things I've ever seen. But we're not going to show you just yet. Here's a sneak peak:

  1. KU campus looks a lot like Indiana University's, Bloomington old main campus before they started taking down those beautiful Ivy League style buildings (or reusing them in an unpleasant way). It was a very beautiful campus back when I went there.

  2. I have been to the Iowa 80 truck stop. Quite the place : ) I like Lawrence, I was there recently for work. Before the trip I never knew that John Brown fought near Lawrence before he famous raid on Harper's Ferry.

  3. This warms our hearts deeply, friends. We hope to see pictures of time spent at Mass Street Music while Hawk's mando was receiving some TLC, as well as the coolest t-shirts ever. Miss you guys.
